The closure of the Target Mid Valley Store on June 2 is a bitter blow for many local workers and families.
Our thoughts are with the workers and their families at this difficult time and hopefully the majority of redundant workers are able to find suitable local employment.
For the sake of existing tenants at Mid Valley Shopping Centre, I also hope some key anchor tenants can be found to replace Target at Mid Valley.
The Latrobe Valley has endured the loss of many major employers within the last 18 months and it’s been a tough time for many people within our community.
Hazelwood Power Station and Carter Holt Harvey are other major businesses that have shut down in this period along with a number of other small and medium enterprises.
In 2016, the State Government increased taxes by an extra $252 million for some of Latrobe Valley’s largest employers, and since this time, we have seen the exit of key businesses in the region.
That was bad policy then and it is bad policy now.
We hear often that the Government is supposedly creating new jobs in the region, but we hear very little about they are retaining existing jobs for local families.
The State Government should have paid more attention to retaining and protecting local jobs and businesses rather than focusing on major tax grabs.
