A petition calling upon the State Labor Government to provide funding for the redevelopment of the Traralgon Swimming Pool has been launched today by Member for Morwell Russell Northe and Member for Eastern Victoria Region Melina Bath.
Mr Northe said the current 50 metre outdoor pool was substantially outdated, significantly underutilised and had had little investment since its opening in 1959.
“Traralgon has a population of approximately 28,000 residents and it’s disgraceful that the town does not have access to its own public heated indoor swimming facility,” Mr Northe said.
“One only has to view the change rooms of the current Traralgon pool to understand that the facility is not up to community expectations.”
Mr Northe said Latrobe City Council in its 10 year Financial Plan made a $12 million commitment towards the development of a $30 million Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre (GRAC) at the current Traralgon Swimming pool site.
“However the development’s progression was reliant upon both State and Federal Government funding,” Mr Northe said.
“I was proud that the former Victorian Coalition Government had in 2014 made a $9 million pre-election commitment to assist in the construction of a GRAC in Traralgon.
“Disappointingly Labor has failed to provide even one dollar of election funding for the 28,000 residents of Traralgon including no support whatsoever for the GRAC development.”
Mr Northe is now calling on the Andrews Labor Government to match the funding commitment of at least $9 million pledged by the Coalition, as a State Government contribution to build the GRAC.
“It’s ludicrous that the Andrews Labor Government can waste $640 million on the East West link debacle, yet can’t find $9 million for the GRAC.
Ms Bath said a new Gippsland Regional Aquatic Centre would allow local swimming enthusiasts to get on the blocks year-round.
“The centre will provide an exciting facility for competition and family recreation swimming in the region.”
Mr Northe and Ms Bath are also calling on Latrobe City Council to review current plans for the GRAC.
“If it is unrealistic that Council can secure the amount of State and Federal Government funding required to construct the GRAC, then maybe a more modest version of a GRAC should be seriously considered to finally give the township of Traralgon their own public heated indoor facility that can be utilised 12 months of the year.”
