Member for Morwell Russell Northe this week in Parliament questioned the Andrews Labor Government where its portion of funding is for the Traralgon-Morwell shared pathway project.
Mr Northe said the Federal Government has committed $1.6 million towards the construction of the Traralgon-Morwell shared pathway.
“The community now calls on the State Government to provide the remainder of the funding to get this project off the ground,” Mr Northe said.
“The Andrews Government made promises last year that announcements would be made before the end of 2016, but we are still yet to hear anything.”
Mr Northe said the Morwell-Traralgon shared pathway was something The Nationals have long supported.
“In 2010 the Liberal-National Coalition made a commitment to provide funding to undertake the work required to determine the route, design and costings of the shared pathway,” Mr Northe said.
“Latrobe City Council subsequently made an application to the State Government’s Safer Cyclists and Pedestrians fund.
“Local bike riders and health enthusiasts have long waited to see the construction of a Traralgon-Morwell shared pathway and are keen to understand whether the Government is going to fund this important project.”
Mr Northe said our community had long fought for this project and it had been a long and frustrating fight and we will not back down.
“It’s now time the State Government got on its bike and match the $1.6 million in funding as provided by the Federal Government,” Mr Northe said.
“The reality is the Federal Government has substantially reduced the contribution required by the State Government yet they still remain silent which is a kick in the guts for our local community.”
