The Andrews Labor Government has been called on to support Morwell’s Lion Dairy site and its workers during State Parliament this week.
Member for Morwell Russell Northe called on the Minister for Employment, Jacinta Allan, to come to the Latrobe Valley and explain how the Andrews Labor Government will support Lion Australia and its Morwell employees.
“Lion’s Morwell dairy is one of the largest employers in our region and a substantial business in the Latrobe Valley so it was concerning to see reports recently about potential job losses at the Morwell site,” Mr Northe said.
“We’ve heard a lot from the government about jobs, and the Premier has said very clearly that he will fight for every job. It is now time for the State Government to fight for these jobs in Morwell.
“This comes at a time when our local business community is already concerned about Premier Andrews’ pushing extra costs onto business with the new Grand Final Parade public holiday and the abolition of the $15 million Latrobe Valley Industry and Infrastructure Fund. “Lion Australia was a recipient under that fund and, with this support from the Liberal-Nationals Coalition government, upgraded its facility to achieve greater efficiencies and increase output,” he said.
“However there is no doubt that at the moment Lion is experiencing some challenges in terms of market competition, particularly with the supermarket and online purchasing providing substantial competition.
“We are asking the Minister to come to the Latrobe Valley and outline any support and assistance the Government can provide, not only to the company itself but also to its employees along with the local union.”
