Member for Morwell Russell Northe has welcomed the commencement of Morwell Primary School’s Regeneration Project.
Mr Northe said clearing the old Morwell High School site on McDonald Street had started.
“The Morwell Primary School Regeneration Project will merge Commercial Road Primary School, Morwell Primary School and Tobruk Street Primary School onto one site,” Mr Northe said.
“Construction is set to take place throughout 2016 with an anticipated opening for the beginning of the 2017 school year.
“The Liberal-Nationals Coalition committed $13 million to this project, which would have also included the redevelopment of Morwell Park Primary School, whilst Labor pledged $12 million.
“The Andrews Labor Government in its 2015/16 budget allocated $10.45 million for the merging of the three schools, but no funding for the redeveloping of Morwell Park Primary School.
“Whilst this is a positive investment for the Morwell community there are concerns that the government hasn’t allocated any money to Morwell Park Primary School for its redevelopment.”
Mr Northe said the newly built School will provide better education outcomes for our students, teachers and parents.
“The development of the school will also provide the opportunity for local businesses and contractors to participate in works, providing an economic boost to the Latrobe Valley,” Mr Northe said.
“The Andrews Labor Government will also need to ensure the three vacant school sites are not left in a state of disrepair, and make sure that the future use of these school sites is addressed quickly.
“I will continue to advocate for Morwell Park Primary and all schools in the Latrobe Valley to make sure our communities get a fair share of education investment.”
