Mr NORTHE (Morwell): My constituency question is directed to the Acting Minister for Emergency Services.
Acting Minister what is the latest information with respect to a review being conducted into the recent Traralgon Creek floods and whereby many local residents, businesses, community organisations and sporting clubs were not adequately warned about the drastic rise in flood levels until after the floods had peaked.
At recent community meetings the frustration and anger of many local residents was palpable given evacuation warnings were not activated until after flood levels had inundated homes, businesses and local facilities. People were placed in precarious situations and thankfully and maybe only luckily there were not any serious injuries or worse.
In the context of a review of the Traralgon Creek flood I also wish to raise the necessity in my view that more needs to be done to support local residents and those clubs and organisations whose facilities have been flooded multiple times over the years. Whether it be grants to perform flood mitigation works in people’s homes or the building of new facilities in areas such as the Traralgon Recreation Reserve something needs to be done and I encourage the State Government to liaise with both Latrobe City Council and the Federal Government to provide the funding to undertake such works.
It is demoralising and heart-breaking for people to be continually flooded. Now is the time to upgrade homes and finalise a master plan for the Traralgon Recreation Reserve and then build new facilities for user groups of the Reserve. Many of the user groups listed below are now in limbo with flooding causing substantial damage to their rooms and facilities.
• Traralgon and District Agricultural Society.
• Traralgon Urban Fire Brigade.
• Traralgon Men’s Shed.
• Traralgon Bridge Club.
• Traralgon and District Pigeon Club.
• Traralgon Football Netball Club.
• TEDAS Junior Football Club.
• Ex Students Cricket Club.
• Traralgon Amateur Boxing Club.
• Traralgon Playgroup.
• South and Central Gippsland Axeman Association.
• Gippsland Superules League.
• Gippsland Roller Derby.
So Acting Minister I ask again what is the latest information with respect to a review being conducted into the recent Traralgon Creek flood and at the same time I also urge you and your Government to work with Local and Federal Government agencies with a view to mitigate any future flood events on the Traralgon Creek by supporting and helping local residents to flood proof their homes, businesses, community and sporting facilities, and to build new facilities for existing user groups at the Traralgon Recreation Reserve.
