Member for Morwell, Russell Northe last week raised in Parliament the ongoing concerns of local builders and homeowners in regards to slow electricity and gas connections to their properties and homes.
Mr Northe requested that the Minister for Energy urgently intervene and resolve the current situation, which has left builders and homeowners out in the cold.
Mr Northe said, “A number of local builders had multiple properties under construction without electricity and/or gas connected and the delays in connections were creating an emotional and financial burden.”
“It’s incredulous that builders have had to resort to either buying or renting generators so that they can complete works on new homes,” said Mr Northe
This issue has been ongoing for months, which is completely unacceptable. Previous advice was that an industrial dispute was the key reason for delays but with that dispute now resolved the Government needs to step in and fix the current ridiculous situation.
It appears that changes to connection procedures between distribution companies and retailers are the current cause of these massive delays and its incumbent on the Minister and the Government to resolve this situation urgently.
“It’s not good enough that on the one hand the Government says it’s concerned about costs for small business yet on the other hand it lets this issue fester without intervention” Mr Northe said.
